Main Street to Marketplace: How Small Businesses Are Selling Online
Pivotal Role of Online Selling Highlighted in Small Business Roundtable Report
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Small Business Roundtable (SBR), a coalition of leading small business and entrepreneurship organizations representing more than 30 million small businesses, today announced the release of its latest research report, Main Street to Marketplace: How Small Businesses Are Selling Online. This report, conducted in collaboration with Morning Consult, provides revelatory insights into the evolving landscape of e-commerce for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Drawing from survey data of over 580 small business leaders who sell online, the report offers a comprehensive analysis of key trends shaping the small business landscape. It highlights how online marketplaces influence business operations, creating both new opportunities and challenges, while also examining how SMEs are leveraging digital platforms to expand their reach, respond to evolving consumer behavior, and navigate an increasingly complex small business environment.
“This report provides valuable insights into how small businesses are adapting to the digital marketplace,” says John Stanford, Co-Executive Director of Small Business Roundtable. “By understanding the habits and needs of online sellers, we can better support their growth and ensure they have the tools necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital economy.”
Key findings from the report include:
- Inflation remains the biggest challenge for small business owners, prompting them to explore new tools and services to manage costs.
- Online advertising, customer acquisition, and brand building are major hurdles for small business owners entering the digital marketplace.
- Facebook Marketplace, Amazon, eBay, and Shopify are the most popular platforms for online sellers, with each offering distinct advantages.
- Seasonal shopping events such as Black Friday and the holiday season drive significant revenue for small online businesses.
Main Street to Marketplace marks the first release from SBR’s newly-formed E-Commerce Council, an initiative dedicated to amplifying the voices of online entrepreneurs and shaping policies that foster a fair and thriving digital marketplace.
